qlite on "An end to religious intolerance"

Unfortunately religions by definition (at least those requiring belief in a single god) are intolerant (of other religions). There is no way around that whatsoever.

"An end to religious irrationality" may be a better concept to promote, though I think leaving mention of religion out altogether may be the sensible option!

In this day and age there is no rational or logical reason to be religious, in the sense of worshipping a god who a) had any involvement in the creation of the earth (or anything) or b) requires followers of other religions to be killed/converted/pitied/despised/insert as appropriate.

Spiritual beliefs are another matter, but you can't end religious intolerance without ending religion, and that goal, desirable as it may be, would seem to be overstretching yourselves a touch!

_WorldS_ ...

Karl Popper's writings describe three worlds:

World 1 -- the world of objective physical reality -- matter, vector forces, space, time

World 2 -- the world of subjective personal experience -- perception, cognition, dreams, creativity.

World 3 -- the world of externalized Objective Knowledge -- theories, methodologies, arts, facts

I might want to add a further world -- World 4 -- the spiritual dimension of life

qlite on "Evil?"

A few thoughts....

With a set of values including "tolerance", "understanding" and "education", to bluntly describe something as "evil" seems a little hypocritical. I'd go so far as to say there can be no justification. The concept of evil implies a division (of whatever) into good and evil - who decides which is what? Who decided communism and socialism were evil?
States which claim or have claimed to be socialist or communist have secrecy, death squads,...
Exactly. Given many would argue a true communist or socialist state has yet to be formed, how can you use evidence from those who merely "claim to be" as evidence against?

The notion of good/evil is not rational, and rationality, even if not explicitly stated, appears to be central to your ethos.

A lot of good sense on your site, I've commented on the two bits that struck me as things I disagreed with, the rest, at first reading, seems to be the basis of a good philosophy for life...

I look forward to some interesting discussions. hopefully with a few more people! (I found this place through a link on a commentisfree post, by the way).
